Chapter Eleven
Somewhere Between Land and Sky …
The Place Between was beautiful. A land of shadow and light which only a Passer could understand. A land only a Passer could bear to enter. This was not a place for the living. This was not a place for any who hadn’t felt the Creator’s touch—who had not been given a power bestowed directly from the Creator’s command. Afra Malaki knew this from the moment she’d entered the Place Between. This was where she guided the souls. This was where she directed them into the Creator’s keeping.
If only I could have done so for Brae … Afra sighed. She knew Brae had been lifted by the Creator himself, protected from the Abyss’s clutches, yet guilt gnawed at her heart for not being there for her. Her sister by law was peaceful now, which was all that mattered in the end.
She floated through the Place Between, waiting for the next command. The Creator would take her wherever she needed to be. Whether at Adlae Sundragon’s side, or back to Kaldon, she did not know. So she waited—her body adrift in the Place Between. Her heart full of the peace that came with being so close to the Creator.
There were not many Passers left. The Abyss did its best to grab hold of a dying soul and drag it from the Creator’s light. Afra had hidden for some time, afraid the Abyss would come for her, as it had come for so many other Passers before her. Yet the Creator’s light never wavered in her soul, and the cry of the dying could no longer be ignored. War was coming, and many would need the gentle Passing only Afra could offer.
A soft urging turned Afra from her present course. She closed her eyes, allowing the will of the Creator to weave through her soul—guiding her physical body out of the Place Between. A moment later, her feet landed on cold stone. Afra frowned, opening her eyes.
Darkness surrounded her, blinding her. Blinking rapidly, she tried to adjust to the dimness of the room.
Where am I? she wondered as a chill breeze swept through, echoing against the walls.
Trust me, my child. The Creator’s answer filled her heart.
Afra stepped forward, lifting her gaze to the ceiling. The darkness was beginning to clear; her eyes adjusting to the blackened room. A frown creased her brow. She was in a dungeon; empty chains hanging from the walls and a domed ceiling offering no windows of light.
Why am I here? Her heart began to pound. A sinking feeling twisted her stomach. A low moan made Afra spin around. She gasped, tears rushing to her eyes when she saw him.
Brecken hung chained to the wall, his legs limp beneath him and his bare chest covered in bruises and cuts. Blood was drying where it had dripped from the wounds.
“No!” Afra cried, tilting her head toward the ceiling. “I won’t! I won’t Pass my own brother!”
Go to him, my child. The Creator said.
Afra burst into tears, covering her face with her hands.
